If your computer hangs for a long time when shutting down there may be a
legitimate reason for this such as an update installing etc.
However in some cases your computer will just hang and not shut down at all. The only way to shut it down may be to hold the power button for a number of seconds.
There are a number of hacks you can do that will speed up computer shutdown speed and stop hanging programs from stopping the shutdown process. To do this we will enable
AutoEndTask and set lower numbers of some timeout parameter in windows registry to handle this issue.
It might be a good idea to back up the registry first!
To open your
regedit application click on start and run and type in
RegeditFind the following folder:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Change the
AutoEndTask to 1.
In the same location set the
HungAppTimeout to 1000
and set the
WaitToKillAppTimeout to 2000.
Now we go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\Control
Set
WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 5000.
In order for this to take effect we need to restart your computer. They will not have an effect on this reboot.
Subsequent reboots should show significant improvement on shutdown times.
The results do vary for different computers depending the specs.
